“Tiny hangover” – Sam Burgess puts Challenge Cup defeat and short turnaround as reasons for Salford los

Warrington Wolves suffered a 25-14 loss to a brilliant Salford Red Devils just six days after losing the Challenge Cup Final and Sam Burgess has referenced that “tiny hangover” as one of the reasons why his side lost.
Salford turned up from the first whistle and blitzed Warrington in the first half leaving Sam Burgess stunned with his side 19-0 down at halftime thanks to brilliant work on the break by the Red Devils.
Tries from Nene Macdonald, Marc Sneyd and a Deon Cross brace took Salford to victory and handed them the two points to go level on points with Warrington in Super League.
The inevitable question was asked of Sam Burgess, ‘How did the Challenge Cup Final affect the performance?’, to which the Englishman attributed a portion of the blame as he labelled it a “tiny hangover” before calling on his players to “get over” the Wembley defeat.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Sam Burgess stated: “I think there’s always going to be a tiny hangover from the final last week, we had one day to prep really and they’ve had two weeks.
“There were three long-range tries in the first half when we were actually executing our gameplan well early in the game. I thought we controlled the possession well, we just ultimately saw a couple of moments go and they scored 18 points.
That’s a lot against Salford, they’re a pretty gritty side, they know how to defend and they can cause you trouble. We’ve got a bit to learn again.”
Pushed further on how his team stacked up compared to last week at Wembley when Wigan Warriors swept Warrington aside, Sam Burgess labelled it an improvement but ultimately called on players to move on from the Wembley woes.
Burgess said: “I thought areas of our game were better this week than last week. We’ve got to move forward, we’ve got to get over Wembley. We’ve got eight days until Hull now so we’ll get out of this game what we need to.
“The players have got to move on too, alright? No one else is feeling sorry for us. The players have got to move on, it’s my job to get them going.”
The loss to Salford means Warrington now have nine wins from fourteen games and are officially past the halfway stage of the Super League campaign. Asked how his side have fared for the first half of the season, Burgess was blunt in his assessment.
“Well you’ve just asked me after three losses, we’ve got a bit of work to do. It starts tomorrow morning.”
On a positive note for Wire fans, it had been revealed before the game by Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks that Warrington are actually one of the teams that are interested in signing Leeds Rhinos star Rhyse Martin.
