Hull KR launch Rhyse Martin move with Robins favourites for Leeds Rhinos star

Post by josie andrews »

Hull KR are closing in on their final signing for 2025, targeting a star player from a Super League rival.

Hull KR have emerged as the shock frontrunners to sign Leeds Rhinos' star forward Rhyse Martin. Rugby League Live can reveal the Robins have launched a move to sign the Papua New Guinea Test captain and are now the clear favourites to secure his signature for the 2025 season.

The deal will almost certainly be the final piece in the Robins' recruitment puzzle heading into the new year. Depth at back-row has been an issue since the beginning of the year and has prevented Dean Hadley spending more considerable time in the front row. However, Martin's acquisition would solve that and then some. The 31-year-old has been one of Super League's best back-rowers for several years and also offers an excellent goal-kicking option, with Martin prolific from the kicking tee

It appeared that Martin would be staying at Leeds after both Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards pulled out of the race for his signature. Leigh had been considered favourites to secure his services before deciding to head in a different direction, while the Wolves recently acquired John Bateman, initially short-term, but their interest waned.

That appeared to have paved the way for Leeds to tie down their long-serving forward, who joined the club midway through the 2019 season. He has gone on to play 124 games for Leeds, scoring 970 points in the process. But Rovers, sensing an opportunity, launched a late bid to lure him away from Headingley and appear highly likely to now succeed.

As a result, Rovers would need to move on one of their existing quota players as they would have eight contracted for next season. Rovers have Peta Hiku, Tom Opacic, Sauaso Sue, Jai Whitbread, Kelepi Tanginoa, Tyrone May and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, who is arriving from Sydney Roosters, as their seven current quota players for next year.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

A handy player to have around.
Would solve their goal kicking problem.
