Super League disciplinary decisions confirmed as Hull KR learn Jai Whitbread punishment after controversy

With Monday rolling around again, it’s time for teams to learn which Super League disciplinary decisions have been made by the RFL – and this includes Hull KR learning Jai Whitbread’s fate after a controversial yellow.

Last week, some hefty bans were handed out, with Fenton Rogers of Huddersfield Giants receiving four games in bans while Paul Vaughan of Warrington Wolves was ruled out of three.

Meanwhile, Castleford duo Sylvester Namo and Liam Horne were banned for two and one games respectively, and Rogers’ teammate Sam Hewitt was banned for a game himself

This week, Friday night saw Wigan Warriors vs Hull KR affected by yellow cards to Joe Burgess and Jai Whitbread, and that saw the Warriors move into prime position to win the League Leaders’ Shield.

Whitbread’s, for a high tackle, was of particular interest to the Panel.

Elsewhere, Leeds Rhinos hammered Hull FC 68-6 in yet another embarrassment for the Black and Whites, while Leigh Leopards stayed on track in their play-off fight with victory over Castleford Tigers.

On Saturday, Warrington Wolves beat St Helens, which means Saints are now level on points with Leeds Rhinos, in a precarious position in the play-off spots.

However, the Wolves saw Lachlan Fitzgibbon sent to the bin for a high tackle – causing disciplinary concern – while Matty Lees was also yellow-carded.

Meanwhile, Salford Red Devils probably secured a post-season berth as they defeated Catalans Dragons, who may now find it tricky to do so themselves.

Their man Alrix da Costa was put on report for a high tackle here – which the Panel have been discussing.

Finally, Huddersfield Giants scraped past London Broncos on Sunday afternoon.

Super League disciplinary decisions confirmed as five banned including unique charge

Warrington Wolves may have won against St Helens but Lachlan Fitzgibbon’s Grade C Head Contact charge will see him miss their next game against Huddersfield Giants, and teammate Sam Powell’s Grade B Head Contact charge means he’s received a £250 fine.

Their opponents, however, see both Moses Mbye and Matty Lees banned for a game.

Mbye’s charge is for Dangerous Contact, but Matty Lees’ is for ‘contact with a match official

Meanwhile, Jenson Windley of Castleford Tigers and Will Lovell of London Broncos both receive £250 fines for Grade B Head Contact.

Moving over to Hull, both Super League sides in the city have players facing bans.

Hull FC will be without Jed Cartwright for a game due to a Grade C Dangerous Contact charge, but it’s Jai Whitbread that was the subject of much debate after a controversial decision to hand him a yellow card.

He’s been given a Grade C Head Contact charge, and will miss a game.

Here are all the charges.

Player Club Charge Grade Sanction

Lachlan Fitzgibbon Warrington Wolves Head Contact C 1 Match Penalty Notice

Sam Powell Warrington Wolves Head Contact B £250 Fine

Matty Lees St Helens Contact with the Match Official B 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher End)

Moses Mbye St Helens Dangerous Contact B 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher End)

Jai Whitbread Hull KR Head Contact C 1 Match Penalty Notice

Jenson Windley Castleford Tigers Dangerous Contact B £250 Fine

Jed Cartwright Hull FC Dangerous Contact C 1 Match Penalty Notice

Will Lovell London Broncos Dangerous Contact B £250 Fine

Thanks goodness all clear for us.

Matty Lees ban is for contact with a match official, not the tackle from which Josh Drinkwater stayed down and Lees was sin binned.
Sam Burgess's answer on that scenario will be interesting, provided of course he's asked the question.

Everyone keeps going on about the “controversial" yellow card & now subsequent 1 match ban on Jai Whitbread!

There wasn’t all this ‘up in arms’ ‘wringing of hands’ & ‘gnashing of teeth’ by all & bloody sundry when Kaide Ellis was subsequently yellow carded which was then followed by a one match ban for an accidental tackle when the defending player, think it was Junior, who tackled the attacking player & pushed the attacker into the head/shoulder of Kaide.

So FFS give it a bloody rest I’m sick of all this that the referees/RFL are all for Wigan!

DISCIPLINARY: Matty Lees and Saints win appeal against ban

SAINTS prop Matty Lees has won his appeal against a one--match penalty notice.

The England front rower was originally punished by the match review panel and charged with Grade B contact with the referee Chris Kendall during the game against Warrington.

However, Saints successfully contested the charge and following a meeting with the Operational Rules Tribunal tonight Lees will now be available to play for in this Friday's Betfred Super League home match against Castleford Tigers.

Following the meeting tonight, the Operational Rules Tribunal downgraded the charge to a Grade A, this resulted in the one-match suspension being lifted, however a £250 fine remains for Lees.

Saints did not contest the ban issued to Moses Mbye for a late hit, who will miss the game.

They will, however, welcome back Tommy Makinson from his two-match ban

Bevan French (Wigan Warriors) – Grade B Contact with Match Official – 1 Match Penalty Notice

French’s ban was an interesting one, with the Wigan halfback appearing to pat referee Liam Moore in a friendly manner during the Warriors’ win.

However, the Match Review Panel has clearly taken a dim view of the incident, with the minutes stating: “Law 15.1 (i) Deliberate or reckless physical contact with a match official (e.g., placing hand on arm to attract attention) Grade B.”

And Lees gets off with everyone blaming the referee!

I’m comparing the difference in the actual "touching" of the referee in two separate games & the charges of one compared to the other.

Bevan French put his hand "gently" on the referee which in that game was Liam Moore. He got a one match ban.

Matty Lees ran charging into the referee which in the game v Warrington was Chris Kendall. He was given a one match ban which Saints appealed against & it was overturned.

My point being is that other clubs are always complaining that Wigan Warriors players have preferential treatment from the RFL, the referees & the disciplinary committee.

Is that point I’m making clear enough?
