Hull KR's Elliot Minchella ban upheld after hearing but club have appeal option
Hull KR's appeal against captain Minchella's ban has been heard today with a verdict reached
Hull Kingston Rovers captain Elliot Minchella has had his two-match ban upheld after a disciplinary hearing - but the club have the option to appeal that again.
The first of those games was served on Friday night, September 20th, when the team defeated Leeds Rhinos to secure a top-two finish and home semi-final as their next match. Today's verdict means Minchella - named the club's player of the year last night - remains ruled out of the semi-final as things stand.
Minchella had been given a punishment for a high shot on Matt Moylan in the 24-0 win away against Leigh Leopards, as he was sin-binned, on September 13th, and it was deemed Grade C contact.
Rovers, risking a potentially frivolous appeal, decided to contest the grading of the ban but not the guilty plea.
The hearing had been deferred until today, rather than heard last week on Tuesday, for availability of a defence team that Rovers wanted.
After the game at Leigh, Hull KR coach Willie Peters had said in his press conference: "I need to have another look at it but it's another one of those where players are going up and they are coming down, it's very difficult to get your tackle right. I don't think there was any intent there. It's one of those where we will just have to wait until Monday. But hopefully they see it for what it is. I don't think he intentionally went out to swing an arm and take Matty Moylan's head off, that's for sure. It was accidental."
Leigh coach Adrian Lam also responded to a question about Minchella's sin-binning after the game, saying: "I don't think those incidents are sin-bins but the way that we've been this year it's the way that that is. There's another time to talk about that sort of thing."
St Helens are an example of a second appeal being successful, when they contested Morgan Knowles' ban before the 2022 Grand Final.

I think Rovers are just getting there practice in as they will be there an awful lot next year once JWH arrives.

After studying the detail of last night's hearing, Rovers will have to decide if they can try to find a way to potentially change the verdict in the way that St Helens did when they succeeded with a second appeal to free Morgan Knowles to play in the 2022 Grand Final, which they won, against Leeds Rhinos.

Elliot Minchell’s agent slams HKR’s Captains ban & takes aim at past players suing the sport
THE agent of Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella has slammed the ban incurred by the Rovers star and taken aim at past players suing the sport.
Graeme Taylor, who manages a number of high-profile stars throughout the tiers of rugby league, took to X to explain his displeasure behind the two-match ban given to Minchella following Rovers’ win over Leigh Leopards almost a fortnight ago.
Minchella was slapped with Grade B Head Contact after his sinbinning during that game, with the governing body and the Disciplinary Match Review Panel continuing to crack down on foul play in a bid to reduce the amount of subsequent knocks players receive.
Taylor, going further, believes that the current lawsuit hanging over the sport’s head involving a number of past players who are suing the governing body for what they deem to be ‘negligence’ is the root cause of the crackdown.
Taylor posted on X: “Games gone..as a sport we constantly try and make sure our best players are not playing in big games, all because a few ex players who are short of a few quid and want to get a payout, time these players names are published and see them removing their claims, it’s not tag rugby.”
Meanwhile, Rovers have not yet made the decision about whether or not to appeal Minchella’s ban at another Operational Rules Tribunal next week.
The club’s tribunal last night proved unsuccessful in downgrading Minchella’s Grade B charge.

Hull KR are appealing Elliot Minchella's ban again, Rugby League Live can reveal. The Robins have opted to launch a second appeal of the suspension imposed on their captain, with the hearing set to take place TODAY.
Rugby League Live has learned that Rovers have opted to go down the route of a second appeal, having seen their initial attempts to overturn the suspension overturned. Minchella was handed a Grade C head contact charge which saw him land a two-match suspension. As a result, he is currently set to miss the play-off semi-final.
Rovers are not contesting the guilty verdict but instead the grading of the charge. They hope to reduce it from Grade C to Grade B, which would subsequently see a match taken off his suspensions and therefore free to play next week. Minchella served the first match of his suspension when the Robins beat Leeds Rhinos last week.
The hearing is understood to be set for this afternoon. As per protocols, Rovers had seven days to decide whether to launch a second appeal, an option they have now decided to pursue.
