Wigan Warriors Grand Final winner receives international call-up

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors Grand Final winning prop Liam Byrne has been called up to a 46-strong Ireland squad ahead of their Autumn International against Scotland.

The men's international game will take place at The Gateshead International Stadium, Newcastle, on Sunday, October 27.

Byrne, 25, recently featured from the interchange bench during Wigan’s 9-2 Grand Final victory over Hull KR at Old Trafford to complete an unprecedented quadruple in 2024.

Across two stints, equalling 30 minutes of action, the forward made 27 tackles for a 100% completion rate.

Wigan academy product James McDonnell has also been called up alongside the likes of fellow Super League players Joe Philbin (Warrington), Frankie Halton, Louis Brogan, Dan Norman, Keanan Brand (Leigh), George King (Hull KR), Ethan Ryan (Salford), James Bentley, Tom Nicholson-Watton (Leeds) and Innes Senior, Louis Senior (Castleford).

Head coach Ged Corcoran will then trim his squad to 24 players ahead of the fixture.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
