Wigan Warriors legend calls for salary cap removal and makes Owen Farrell ‘£10 million’ claim

Post by josie andrews »

Rugby league great Martin Offiah has insisted Super League has to remove the salary cap if it wants to become one of the biggest sports in the United Kingdom: before stating the game should have paid ‘£10million’ to entice Owen Farell.

Offiah was part of one of the greatest Wigan sides in the history of the sport – and it was their dominance which largely led to the creation of the Super League salary cap, limiting what teams can spend.

Nah. Does anyone really believe OF turning to league would cause an explosion of interest in the game from Union fans (which presumably is the idea)? I don't. And if there ever was a time for something like that to happen (which I doubt), it would have been decades ago. Now, the headlines would be "Ageing rugby star goes for one last hurrah".

Offiah, like Garry Schofield, gets paid for this stuff. If they said anything sensible, it wouldn't get the headlines, and they'd lose their income.

When I first read it I thought he’s been on the wacky baccy or something! 🥹regarding Owen Farrell & the salary cap of 10 million.

But the some of the things make sense though about us thinking we are number 2 in RL. Blame the RFLfor that!

We have to increase the salary cap to get better investors in the sport. We have gone backwards & I blame that on the a) salary cap being too low & b) the Yorkshire clubs want to stagnate & holding back the sport instead of promoting it.

If these clubs can’t compete money wise we will always be a small sport in England.

It’s taken over 20 years for Castleford & Wakefield to do anything with their stadiums & even with the bits they’ve done they’re still crap grounds to go to! Mind you, Leeds are no better for away supporters! 🤨
