Peet Previews Oldham friendly
* Matt Peet has previewed Sunday’s first pre-season outing against Oldham.
* Peet: “It’s big for us, we are looking forward to it, and it’s a step in the right direction.”
* Tickets for Sunday’s friendly at Boundary Park can be purchased HERE.
MATT PEET HAS LOOKED AHEAD TO SUNDAY’S OPENING PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY AGAINST OLDHAM AT BOUNDARY PARK.
A select Warriors squad will face the Betfred League One champions in the first of two pre-season friendlies, with Peet sharing the Warriors’ excitement ahead of this weekend’s meeting.
“This match is important, particularly for some of our younger players who have been in working hard since early November,” Peet said. “It’s the next stage in our journey from the start of pre-season and I know our lads are delighted to have a game.
“The way we carry ourselves this weekend will contribute to what will be a great day. It’s big for us, we are looking forward to it, and it’s a step in the right direction.”
On the importance of fixtures within the pre-season schedule, Peet said: “Friendlies allow you to see where you are. There will be good elements but also parts to work on the following week. The first part of pre-season is mostly coaching by numbers, but now the lads are ready to take to the field.”
New signing George Hirst, who was part of Sean Long’s Oldham squad that achieved promotion to the Championship last season, could make his first Wigan outing this weekend.
“George is exactly what we were looking for – he’s a physical individual who is eager to learn,” Peet revealed. “You can see he’s taken good habits from his time at Oldham such as his attitude and work ethic both sides of the ball. He’s excited and we’re looking forward to seeing him on Sunday.”

Re: Peet Previews Oldham friendly
Matt Peet reveals names of Wigan Warriors stars to feature in pre-season friendly
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has previewed his side’s upcoming friendly against Oldham and revealed which certain players will start.
It will be the first pre-season fixture for both sides although Oldham had been slated to face local rivals Rochdale Hornets last weekend before the game was cancelled due to the weather.
For Wigan, it will be the first of two pre-season games with the second coming against Leeds Rhinos in Ash Handley’s testimonial a week later at Headingley
Wigan head coach Matt Peet has spoken on the importance of this first test, doing a joint interview with Oldham head coach Sean Long on the Championship club’s YouTube channel.
“It’s important. It’s another step in the journey to the start of the season,” Peet explained with Wigan’s first competitive game not coming until Round Three of the Challenge Cup in early February.
Peet continued, explaining: “I think the lads will be delighted that there is a game this weekend, particularly some of the younger lads who have been in since early November and worked really hard and they’re here to play rugby at the end of the day.”
Wigan Warriors to name strong squad to face Oldham
The quadruple winners head to Boundary Park for the fixture this weekend with the match signifying the two club’s partnership according to Peet.
He revealed: “It’s big for us, we look forward to it and I think it’s a good step in the right direction for our partnership with Oldham. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
He also underpinned just how important it is to have games in order to be able to know how and what to improve and target in training.
“You kind of find out where you are up to,” he said.
“Some of it will be good and some not so good but you’ve got something to work on for the following week, whereas sometimes in pre-season you’re just coaching by numbers and guessing a little bit.”
Perhaps most interesting to many Wigan Warriors and Oldham fans is just what sort of lineup Peet will name and it sounds like it will be a strong one, especially in the forward pack.
Peet revealed: “I’ve had a chat with Sean about the team. The starting pack will be particularly experienced so the likes of Tyler Dupree, Kruise Leeming, Liam Byrne, Sam Walters, George (Hirst) will play and some other young forwards – Harvie Hill is in there.
“The backs will be a little bit less experienced but still with some first-team games under their belt.
“What you’ll find is that some of the lads at the weekend whose names you don’rt know, a couple of years ago that was someone like Junior Nsemba so it’s a chance to see hopefully the next crop

Dupree: Ready to go
* Tyler Dupree has previewed Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Oldham.
* Dupree: “The week won’t change too much as we are still in pre-season so the main goal is to get fitter, faster and stronger.”
* Tickets for Sunday’s friendly against Oldham can be purchased online HERE.
TYLER DUPREE HAS LOOKED AHEAD TO SUNDAY’S PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY AGAINST HIS FORMER CLUB, OLDHAM.
The prop forward, who was named the Championship Young Player of the Year after scoring 10 tries in 18 appearances for the Roughyeds in 2021, is relishing the opportunity to face his old side.
“Joining Oldham is when I started enjoying my rugby again so I owe the Club a lot for the happiness they brought back,” Dupree said. “To play against them will be a little weird, but I’ll be going there with respect for what they contributed to my career.”
Wigan face the Betfred League One champions at Boundary Park in the first of two friendlies, with Dupree believing the Warriors stand in a ‘positive’ position in their preparations for the new season.
From the start of pre-season you build towards playing games,” Dupree said. “Now we have a game our mind is focused on that, however, our week won’t change too much as the main goal is to get fitter, faster and stronger. We’ve prepared as we would for any other game as Oldham are respectable opponents who have signed well. It’s just good to be back preparing to play.”
Speaking through his aims ahead of Sunday’s clash, Dupree said: “Personally, it’s to get minutes in the tank. Everyone knows the first game of pre-season is tough as no matter how much running you’ve done through the off-season, nothing is the same as game fitness.
“We’re looking forward and excited for these friendlies ahead of Challenge Cup and Super League fixtures next month. We’re ready to get going and start building on a great year last season.”

Re: Peet Previews Oldham friendly
Over The Years: Oldham
WIGAN WARRIORS TRAVEL TO BOUNDARY PARK THIS SUNDAY TO TAKE ON OLDHAM IN THE FIRST OF TWO FRIENDLIES AHEAD OF THE NEW SEASON.
Matt Peet has selected youth and experience in his 21-player squad to face the League One champions.
Ahead of the pre-season encounter, we look back at three meetings between the Clubs from over the years:
Oldham 4-12 Wigan, Challenge Cup, 1989.
Wigan advanced to the Challenge Cup Semi-Final after a hard-fought victory over Oldham in snowy conditions at Watersheddings.
A moment of brilliance from Andy Gregory saw the half-back create an opportunity with three consecutive kicks which led to Shaun Edwards scoring mid-way through the first half with Joe Lydon converting.
Paul Lord reduced the score at the start of the second half with a try in the corner before a neat exchange of passes saw Kevin Iro slide over in the corner to set Wigan on their way Challenge Cup success as Graham Lowe’s side beat St Helens 27-0 at Wembley in April.
Wigan 30-16 Oldham, Challenge Cup, 1991.
19,057 supporters were in attendance when Wigan beat Oldham at Bolton’s Burnden Park to seal their place in the Challenge Cup Final.
Edwards grounded a kick to open the scoring for Wigan before Ellery Hanley and Andy Goodway each cut through the Oldham defence to increase the score to 18-0 at the break.
Despite John Henderson reducing the points after K. Iro crossed in the corner, Frano Botica added a fifth try when he gathered a loose ball before accelerating clear from halfway. Charlie McAllister and Mike Ford added Oldham tries before the end, however, Wigan progressed to Wembley where they beat St Helens 13-8.
Oldham Bears 16-56 Wigan, Super League, 1996.
Gary Connolly scored a hat-trick as Wigan recorded an emphatic victory at Oldham in the opening round of the 1996 Super League season.
Martin Offiah touched down the Club’s first try of the Super League era in the early stages before a quick-fire Connolly double established a 16-0 lead after 20 minutes. Wigan extended their advantage to 36-0 at the break after further tries from Martin Hall, Henry Paul, Kris Radlinski and Connolly.
Despite three Oldham scores on their first outing at Boundary Park, Wigan crossed twice through Edwards as Offiah and Radlinski claimed their second tries of the contest to seal comfortable win.
Tickets to watch the Warriors in action for the first time in 2025 can be purchased directly through Oldham HERE.
