Salford Red Devils players take stand with training position over unpaid wages

Post by josie andrews »

The saga at Salford Red Devils continues to progress in an unwanted way.

The Salford Red Devils playing group has informed the club they will not attend training until they are paid. All Out Rugby League has learned the the players have decided to take a stand after they did not receive their wages for the month and will not participate in any rugby activities until the issue is resolved.

The Salford players attended a meeting on Friday, where they were informed that they would not be paid until next week. They were due to be paid on Thursday but Salford had hoped they would receive the money before the end of the month.

That hasn't materialised and they've now been informed the wages aren't likely to arrive until Tuesday or Wednesday. In response, the players have now collectively decided to stand down from training until the matter is resolved, impacting their preparations ahead of their game with Castleford Tigers on Friday. The coaching staff are believed to be understanding of the players' position on the matter.

It's more unwanted distractions for the Reds, who have gone through a torrid four months of adversity amid ongoing financial issues. They are now at risk of being placed back under special measures if the issue is not resolved by Tuesday of next week. If that was to happen, they would have the sustainability cap imposed on them once again.

Head coach Paul Rowley admirably fronted questions on Sky Sports Friday night, expressing confidence that the issue would be resolved.

Salford have endured a terrible start, losing all three games. They suffered a Super League record defeat to St Helens in the opening round while unable to play most of their star players and have since lost comfortably to Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
