Everything Matt Peet said on 'outstanding' Hull FC after Wigan Challenge Cup loss
The holders are OUT after squandering a 22-6 lead against Hull FC.
Wigan boss Matt Peet labelled Hull FC “outstanding” as they dumped his side out of the Challenge Cup in a huge shock. The holders and quadruple-winners were left shell-shocked after letting a 22-6 lead drop at home to the Black and Whites.
Hull winger Lewis Martin’s second half hat-trick blew them apart as they delivered 20 unanswered points in a stunning performance. World Club champions Wigan, hoping to win seven major trophies in a row, unusually fell apart with alarming ease as FC skipper Aidan Sezer picked them apart.
Peet admitted: “Obviously we’re very disappointed. Everyone's hurt. It has to hurt. We're hurt for the fans, and the Cup means a lot to us. To not be in it at any time is disappointing. We’ve had a decent run, but it’s back down to earth now.
“Hull were outstanding, and we were very poor. We overplayed our hand at times. Credit to Hull. They were magic.”
Wigan had to undergo a reshuffle when Jai Field came off with a tight hamstring in the 21st minute.
They were 16-0 ahead at that point. Asked if that caused the issue of their collapse, Peet maintained: “I think credit just goes to Hull.
“Every team has things happen in a game where they've got to swap around. I just thought Hull were by far the better team. At times when we were in front, I just thought we were a bit loose with the ball.
“When Hull got momentum then, the points started to come, and we weren't disciplined enough to regain control of the game.”
Wigan also failed to make the extra man count when John Asiata was sin-binned, Martin actually scoring when Hull were down to 12 men.
Martin also did something few people ever do—rounding former Man of Steel Bevan French on the outside with a burst of pace for his second try, leaving the rapid Aussie in his trail..
Asked if he had ever seen that happen before, Peet replied: “I thought Hull were outstanding. Aidan Sezer, (Jordan) Rapana have had outstanding games, and the credit goes to them rather than picking out our lads.”
In one piece of good news for Wigan, Aussie loose forward Kaide Ellis did pass his concussion check.
Peet said: “He passed (his HIA) in the dressing room. I think he said his neck was jarred, and it looked painful. We don't know yet [with Field]. He said it felt tight and it’s one of those we can’t risk. We need to be a lot better.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Hull were not outstanding. They didn’t need to be.
What is missing from “Everything Matt Peet said” is him acknowledging he made a complete balls up of the changes when Field was injured. Yes injuries can happen in a game but he failed to deal with them as a coach.
That was the biggest reason why we lost in my opinion, not Hull being outstanding. Saying they were, so making them out to be something they were not, is an excuse.

To be fair, the lad Barron scored two very good tries (the third was gifted to by bad defending). He had a bit to do with the first two, and did it very well. But what bugged me was, on our sporadic visits to their 20 in the second half, we failed to build any pressure and maintain field position.

We can always depend on Dave O telling the way it is. We will learn fro itDaveO wrote: ↑Sun Mar 16, 2025 12:32 am Hull were not outstanding. They didn’t need to be.

Barron didn't score any. It was Lewis Martin who got the hat-trick. Let's give credit where it's due to the best display by a winger in a Wigan game this seasonmoto748 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 16, 2025 1:34 am To be fair, the lad Barron scored two very good tries (the third was gifted to by bad defending). And after all that if Smith had converted and we hadn't bombed to tries with poor passing the Ecklsey we would be having different posts.
Lockers needs to earn his money now, how we have gone from lady years defence to the current standard is worrying, regardless of moving players their ability to defend should not be impacted.

These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Thompson reacts to Challenge Cup loss
* Luke Thompson has reflected on a 26-22 defeat to Hull FC in the Betfred Challenge Cup.
* Thompson: “We’ll have to get our heads together, watch this one back and try to fix up on things in training this week.”
* Watch further reaction with Matt Peet and Harry Smith on Wigan TV HERE.
LUKE THOMPSON HAS REFLECTED ON WIGAN WARRIORS’ BETFRED CHALLENGE CUP FOURTH ROUND DEFEAT TO HULL FC.
Despite first half tries from Zach Eckersley, Jai Field, Junior Nsemba and Liam Farrell, the visitors came from behind at The Brick Community Stadium to knock the Warriors out the competition.
Sharing his initial thoughts post-match, Thompson said: “It’s pretty devasting to be honest – a real sickener. We were up at half time thinking we had the game in a good spot and from there we should have been able to close it out. Unfortunately we didn’t, and Hull FC deserve credit for the way they came back to get the win.”
On where the game was lost, Thompson said: “I’m not sure at the moment, I’ll have to watch it back. There’s a few moments in the game that probably wasn’t us and to concede so many points in the back end it wasn’t acceptable. That’s something we’ll have to look at and fix up very quick.”
When asked if injuries impacted the result, Thompson said: “Obviously the injuries weren’t ideal, but we can’t use that as an excuse. We still had 13-players on the pitch for the full 80 minutes so overall we just need to be better next time.”
Looking ahead to the visit to Leeds Rhinos, Thompson said: “This loss is going to sting us. We’ll have to get our heads together, watch this one back and try to fix up on things in training this week. Leeds will provide another tough test, but we’ll be going there determined to move on.”

Does Peet think we are morons?
What a pathetic statement.
Hull were not great. Wigan were terrible.
He often talks about “honesty”. Maybe he should try and display some?

I can see the point you're making Wintergreen but I don't mind Matty talking up the opposition when we're beaten. I'm sure he knows that we were poor and let the game slip away but it's never a good look for the beaten coach not to give the winners some credit. I'm sure Matty doesn't want to be talked about in the same breath as coaches like Darryl Powell.
