Lindsay
With the news that M Lindsay has been appointed to the board of Wigan Athletic. I hope that he knows more about soccer players than he does about rugby players. After 6 years at the head of the rugby team, responsible for all signings. He was the only man to hire and fire until Millward came on the scene. Can anyone tell me one good player Lindsay has signed on ? Millward has signed four players since he arrived. WE are stuck with Vaealiki for anothe season after this, unless of course we are able to off load him.

i think you need to have a re-think on that last statement! are you sure you are only looking for one good player he has signed? how about for starters: ellery hanley, then maybe:brett kenny, gene miles ,andy gregory. i could go on,but i won't because it brings back bad memories of all the beatings these players handed out to saints in the eighties and nineties. Ok, so there've been some donkeys in recent years as well, but the good has outweighed the bad (Hilton, Noyards, Davico, Malam...)

Botica! Now there was a playmaking stand off! He was Wigan through and through. He could create for others, make breaks, support and by crikey could he kick goals!GeoffN posted:Carney, Dallas, Renouf, Newton, Lam, Furner, Craig Smith...wink posted:

Ops I hit the edit button rather than post reply, sorry Doug!
Anyway:
Millward is in charge of recruitment because ML gave him that role.Bottica is probably the feather in Lyndsey's cap because he went against John Monie who wanted Phil Blake and insisted with sign Franno.
Signing the likes of Hanley, Kenny, Miles, Offiah, Gregory etc doesn't count because there was no gamble there.
They were proven to be world class players.
It's now that Lyndsey is exposed because he doesn't have a big bag of cash to go to Australia with and he cannot just look at he Kangaroo test side like a menu in pizza hut and say I'll have that one.
This is why Millward should be solely in charge of recruitment.
Also whenever have Wigan ever raided the Kangaroo test side for players? In the early days of his reign we had Kenny & Feguson (who wasn't an international) but the great sides of the 90's had few if any Australian internationals on the books for long.
I suppose Lindsay had no hand in setting up the system for bringing through many young players who came through the Wigan ranks to go on to be great players for the club?
Players like Edwards, Betts, Clarke, Robinson, Andy Farrell and Kris Radlinski.
If all he ever did was wave the cheque book these players would never of had a look in as Wigan would simply have bought the ready made product from elsewhere.
He also signed some players who were not internationals but who gave the club great service such as Billy McGinty. Players like Martin Dermott Steve Hampson were not internationals when they started at Wigan.
Neither was O'Loughlin for that matter and look at Ashton, a product of a system put in place at Wigan under Lindsay's leadership.
The Iro bros were not that well known when they signed (particularly Tony).
You can go on and on about players who he signed who were not known as the worlds best player but came here and did well for us and you can list many great players produced by the club under his leadership.
He also brought the likes of Graham Loewe and John Monie to the club and if you think signing top players and top coaches is simply a matter of waving a cheque book Leeds would have dominated in the 80's and 90's, not Wigan.
Lindsay makes mistakes sure enough but saying he only built great Wigan sides by signing international players with the aid of a cheque book is crazy. The fact all the great Wigan sides had local lads who came through the ranks in them is proof of that.
