i don't think goulding is what we need at the moment. vaealiki and richards have really sparked a good partnership and that alst try was awesome wing/centre play, the break and the back up. however, calderwood needs a good big centre, who is an out and out CENTRE. not a second rower, not a winger, a centre. goulding is only 18? at the moment he ISNT the answer to our centre problems. let him learn, don't throw him in the deep end, let him size up a little but don't lose speed then give him a go.

I think size is overrated as one of the qualities of a center...lots of good centres we've had that haven't been that big - Deano being a prime example.- psycho - posted:

IMO, Goulding's shown enough in the limited appearances he's had to justify an extended spell in the 17; I'd certainly pick him on the bench ahead of Withers. Then when one of the second rows needs a rest, as others have said, move Bailey to 2nd row and Goulding to centre.
IMO, we always need 2 props on the bench, at least until Fielden recovers some form, and presuming Millard will keep his place, we need a back as 4th sub. For me, that should be Goulding, not Withers.

i guess you're right geoff.
BUT
with calderwood, i think size is important as he needs a centre who will attract 2 men in, with the time to get the blal to him much like senior at leeds. not exactly small is kieth senior.

Bailey's pretty big, but he's not doing it.- psycho - posted:

I think Goulding has better handling skills, and is certainly quicker.
We seemed to have a lot more threat down the right when he came on and Bailey moved into the pack in the HKR game.
Incidentally, he's also scored more tries than Bailey, despite his limited game time.

That's my point, really, but we can't afford to pay big money for another centre as well as filling the holes we have elsewhere, and we don't need Bailey as just another second row.- psycho - posted:bailey isn't a centre.GeoffN posted:

Re: Calderwood must be jea...
It's quite a starnge situation we have with Bailey! Like most on here i agree that Calderwood does suffer from not having a flair attacking centre like Senior or Gleeson! However, how many opposing centres have you seen get the better of Bailey this season? My point is this, he is such a tough defender that he almost cancels any threat from even a top class centre such as senior, Yeaman, or a Toopi! This in turn is benefiting Calderwood defensiveley as we have seen! In truth, i might be tempted to leave Bailey in the centre, as like Dave O or Geoff posted, we tend to play to the other side anyway, so even a top class strike centre might not see that much opportunity! Because of this, it's the other side we need to address with a real attacking player who can replace Vialeki!
With regard to Goulding, while i think he looks like a future talent, it's a bit much to start him in the centre next season, and i would be tempted to play him off the bench for at least another season. After all, he's still only 18! I think he still might struggle a tad in defence!
Ideally, Bailey would be better suited to partnering Richards! Both are pretty independant players who create for themselves, whereas Calderwood is the kind of winger that needs the attacking centre to draw the man with the fancy feet, than slip him the pass!

toopi, class? please don't get me started. the guy wouldn't be able to hold on to the ball if the other 12 players were helping him.
