The reason why Ashley Klein will never be a top referee

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Was it not intent by Matty Smith to "con" the referee, for a penalty or another set?

Players are of the ability to do this deliberately imo - just look at the "reefing" controversies, how often is the ball "dropped/released" in order to gain a penalty? Rather than a genuine attempt to "ball steal".
So the players are always trying to get an unfair advantage, so why is it so unbelievable to you that Webb tried to do this?

If we accept your premise Rob that he lifted his leg to try to obstruct the play of the ball then do you accept that he failed miserably and had he done so with real intent he could have done far better.

Why punish a raised knee pushing fresh air and ignore players wrestling / squeezing / holding down in tackle after tackle. If you say penalties spoil the game then why opt to award one for such a pedantic non entity of an offence.

Can you imagine? Mr webb you are called before this panel to answer the charge of deliberately kneeing fresh air :o

Or put it the other way (to you) - Smith also trying to "con" officials!!!
I admit, on first viewing the incident (long shot/tv match pictures), I thought it was a penalty. Anyone in closer proximity could blatantly see it was NOT. Don't be so pedantic and defend a genuine instance where you are not right and admit that the penalty should not have been given. It's not like everyone here will "harangue" you for being honest in your assessments once in a while.

But it disheartening to think that you might just be another Grade A Steve Ganson clone in the making!!!

In that case, let's ignore swinging arms and clenched fists that miss their intended target!

What message would it send out if you allowed attempted foul play to go? If a player gets away with something they push it a bit further to see how far they can push.

 Rob he pushed fresh air with his knee. You and I and every man, woman and child know that you could find a thousand better reasons to award a penalty than that incident. It was laughable.

Straight from the horse's mouth...

The penalty was given against Brent Webb against Saints for - keeping his hands in at the ruck, dipping his right knee into the ruck area and then the final straw was lifting the left knee in order to intefere with the PTB and slow it down.

You're not that naive, Allan. You get 12 year olds leaving hands in at the ruck then lying on so just imagine the amount of extra sublties an international player has picked up.
