Offiah was fast but there have been several faster. What separated Offiah from say Mark Preston was his body swerve and long stride length. As others have mentoned speed alone is not enough. MxDonald Bailey and others proved that. I think Ade Mafe who was electric over 60 metres was the last athlete to try in this country. Locally Trevor Painter was very fast and played for Pats at junior level. He now coaches athletics.

For Wigan, before my time but Trevor Lake looked fast and damn stylish. Not sure how quick Nordgren was but he seemed like a flyer. More recently we had Henley Smith as already mentioned and once he got going Ray Mordt was fast. I was told by a knowledgable source that Lydon and Smyth are the 2 Wiganers who were fastest at school level.

Difficult to compare players from different eras; Boston was faster than just about anyone, in those days, but dunno how he'd fare against modern players. My hunch is that today's players are fitter and faster.

I remember him. Didn't he win a challenge race with Offiah in Sydney?

The Aussies have been discussing it already. http://forums.melbournecupchallenge.com ... p?p=204351

For Offiah fans - remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1QHLrG2gQ4

On his day ET was no slouch either!

Scholfield mentioned this years ago and said Offiah slipped on the line

I remember Offiah running round ET in Aus the game Mike Greg went the full length.

Offiah always seemed to have another gear as he could keep the gap over anyone.
