I think the company who bought JJB are closing down the JJB stores and replacing them with another company they own.

If JJB stores are closing for what ever reason it is more likely they will end the sponsorship deal with Wigan Athletic and the JJB stadium.

No. JJB have actually bought 2 companies. Some of the "JJB" stores that were closed are being reopened under these new names.

Wouldn't be surprised if the stadium changes names when the contract for naming rights runs out.

JJB Sports said today that its new store concept and "retro fit-outs" would help it strengthen its trading postion, despite a difficult retail environment.

Revenue at stores open for at least a year fell 1.2 per cent in the 12 weeks to July 20, said the Wigan-based company.

Same-store sales fell 2 per cent at the company's retail outlets during the 12-week period but increased 5.9 per cent at its fitness clubs.

The fall in sales slowed in comparison with the previous quarter, when revenue dropped 5.3 per cent.

Shares in JJB Sports edged down 0.25p to 89.75p. Less than 10 months ago the stock was trading above 200p

Roger Lane-Smith, chairman at JJB, will tell shareholders at the annual meeting today that JJB Sports' management team "remained cautious about the outlook for the remainder of 2008.

"I am confident that the executive board are taking the right decisions to get us through what looks like being a very challenging second half to the year,'' he said.

In April, JJB Sports cut 800 jobs after profits fell by almost 30 per cent.

Mike Ashley's Sports Direct is on course to meet downgraded City profit forecasts despite recent tough trading conditions and consumer confidence falling to a 15-year low.

In a pre-close trading update, the retailer said it was "confident" of meeting expectations for underlying earnings of £148m in the year to the end of April.

The target compares with the £208m achieved last year, but forecasts for the company, which operates the Sports World chain of discount sports stores and owns brands including Lonsdale, Karrimor, Slazenger, Dunlop and Everlast, have been whittled back after a series of profits warnings related to poor weather, cautious consumers and the England football team failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

Sports Direct, which joined the stockmarket 14 months ago, said trading for the whole group remained "challenging".

As usual, the company gave no more information in its update; there was no like-for-like sales data and no information about what had been selling particularly well or badly.

The shares, which joined the market at 300p and sank to 85p just before Christmas, lost 1.4%%, dipping to 110.75p.

Executive deputy chairman Ashley has been increasing his control of the business as a result of a share buyback programme. The entrepreneur sold 43% of the business, netting £930m, at the time of the float.

All this after the Office of Fair Trading, took Sports Direct to Court, to prevent the constant "Closing Down Sales" signs that customers were consistently and regularly complaining about.

Following discussion with the OFT, Sportsdirect.com Retail Ltd (previous name: Sports World International Ltd), Hargreaves (Sports) Ltd and Gilesports plc have agreed to provide undertakings not to mislead consumers over any future 'closing down' promotions.

The OFT received complaints that certain shops owned by the companies were displaying 'closing down' advertisements in their shop windows for several months, however some of the shops in question did not close or they closed temporarily for a very short period of time for refurbishment.

The OFT considered the advertisements to be in breach of the Control of Misleading Advertisements Regulations 1988 (the CMARs).

Is the reason for changing the name of the stadium not down to Dave Whelan not being the major shareholder in JJB sports.Is he like us looking for more sponsership for his football club albeit with a new name for the stadium and new sponsership .JJB was owned entirely by DW when the stadium was built he could have named it the Whelco stadium but he opted for JJB as he was MD of the company.
Saints,Bradford and Huddersfield have renamed their stadia.

Compared to trading figures in recent years, Sports Direct/World/Soccer/etc are up shit creek.

Consumer spending has plummeted. The biggest blow for sports retailers was England not qualifying for Euro 2008.
