Incredulous is the only word to describe this thread or rather the views of a tiny minority.

Tony you worry me. You play the game and yet you have the gaul to claim Offiah was purely a runner. I have seen many wingers, many fast ones and all the great speedsters were far more than just runners. Offiah falls into that category.

Sure speed was vital in Offiah scoring so many tries but lest you were watching him play with your eyes shut you should have realised what amazing handling he possessed taking balls at any height/difficulty, the sublime footwork/evasion skills/an ability to know just how close but how far to get to a defender but curve away without being tackled but what made Offiah special was a standard of support play that was up their with the likes of Hanley and Edwards. Rarely did a match pass where Offiah poopped up far from the customary wing position to take a pass and score. As his carrer progressed he even started to realise that he could draw defenders to him and pop a pass to a supporting runner to run through a yawning gap. The man was a freakish player. A once in a lifetime players.

Wigan did not need him KW? John Monie thought otherwise Maurice Lindsay thought otherwise. I will say this had Wigdnes ever reached Wembley with him in their team they could have broken our great run. I saw him take a championship from us at Naughton Park. 3 tries that could not be scored by just a runner Tony. So Wigan did not need him. I must have got the Castleford and Leeds victories at Wembley totally wrong because by my reckoning on those days we damn well needed Offiah. Not that huge but the World 7's who was pivotal in that success.

I am not even sure you are for real KW and not just winding people up. Green Vigo was not in the same class as Offiah. Mark Preston another decent flyer but not in the same class as Offiah.

CP I agree with you completely. The only further thing I wanted to add was that if Wigan had not signed him when we did the chances are he would have followed Doug Naugton to Leeds. (If I remeber correctly they actually thought that they had signed him). At the time Leeds were our closest competitors and had a very talented team. They ran us very close in 93/94 and 94/95 in both the league and the challenge cup. I know its pure speculation at the time Martin Offiah could have made a signifant difference to their team.

The trouble is because you think Offiah was just a runner it's quite plausible you actually believe the above as well, never mind the smiley.

I mean anyone who thinks he was just a runner has serious question marks over their judgement of players.

An example of someone who is just a runner is Roberts who seemingly can't make any space for himself. (The fact he isn't too fast either is another issue).

Offiah was capable of making his own space and didn't rely on someone putting him away with acres of space so no one could catch him.

That try v Leeds where Tait waved him on the outside was an absolute classic example.
