I'm fed up with hearing comments like this about Wigan. There have been teams for the past 2 or 3 seasons now, gang tackling, slowing the play the ball down, killing the game. Leeds, Hull, Wakefield , and more. Huddersfield last season were terrible for this, kill the game, wear the opposition down, and then nose in front. That really was like watching paint dry. Now because Wigan are slowing the opposition down, no more than any other team I might add, all of a sudden it's a big issue. Could it be that it has something to do with us being top of the table? At the end of the day, you don't score 350 points by playing boring rugby.

Aye and the thing is when huddersfield started doing it they were near the bottom of the league but had one of the best defensive records IIRC at least we've not made our attacking rugby suffer as they did by being defensive minded. Would love to see the ratio of tries scored without kicks to tries scored with kicks compared to other teams and compared to ourselves last year. It had got to the point where it was too easy to score by kicking to the corner and we are leading the way in changing that.

Kear likes to make sure the Rugby League fans are entertained .

0 - 56 at home to Huddersfield i bet the Giants fans were entertained .
54 - 14 away to the Warriors , we were all entertained on Monday .

I would rather put 3 men in a tackle than resort to straight arm tackles head high . Talking to some Wakefield fans on the way back to the station on Monday they were not only embarassed by thier teams display but disgusted by the thier tactics .

I like the rest of Wigan loves the way the team are playing and it is brilliant to see them putting so much effort.They are not playing in the style of Union,I would say the team is playing more like an NRL team if anything,especcially the defence.

I love how we are getting up peoples backs,it shows Wigan RLFC are back in business. The previous decade was just a training session =)

Really is borderline idiotic the comments the coachs are coming out with.

4-5 men in the tackle against the spirit of the game is it?, well how about lets do away with tackling all together or ban passing and kicking.

What do they think the RFL are going to do say "you must only now have 2 men in the tackle"

id like to go to kear and ask him, "ok so what your basically saying is;

You dont like the way wigan play because you couldn't get through the defence?

"

and see what his response was

It was interesting that Kear's opinions were not echoed by Demitriou on the Super League show. He was glowing in his praise. I sent the following to Boots'n'all and Phil Clarke (although I don't imagine that I will get a reponse)
Mailed to Sky
I would just like to say how disappointed with John Kear’s comments following Wakefield’s defeat to Wigan on Monday.

I find his “I thought it was like watching paint dry" comment ridiculous. Wigan scored some scintillating tries including two 60 metre plus efforts from Joel Tomkins and Amos Roberts which were a great advert for the game and worth the price of admission on their own. Wigan’s style of defence is within the rules of the game and his comments come across like sour grapes after his side were made to look decidedly second best.

It’s interesting that he didn’t make the same comments after the season opener against Wigan last season. That game ended 12 – 6 in the Wildcats favour; was played in appalling conditions and was very much 5 drives and a kick. Perhaps he would like a return to winter rugby played on quagmire like pitches?

I assume that he only finds it boring when his side are being thrashed?

Best Regards,

Kears comments are dangerous for us as they are designed to put pressure on the referees. Ganson has already shown what can happen when a ref tries to show he is controlling our ruck speed.
IMO Madge needs to speak out to the press, and Stuart Cummings and make it very clear we are following the rules 100% and that we are doing what every club in SL tries to do but we are doing it it better.
It also needs pointing out that slowing the ruck is for THE GOOD OF THE GAME!!! In the long run its increases the need for quality half backs to actually unlock defences with skill, or spreading the ball out to the wings, rather than relying on scoots from acting half.
I can't understand Hemmings & Stevo's obsession with the quick PTB & broken field play. Its far more enjoyable to see set plays and off the cuff skill cut open a set defense. Thats proper rugby. Thats how we have played this season so far, and long may it continue.

One last thing!!

IF, as Kear says, we are committing 4 & 5 players to each tackle then we should be very easy to get around out wide, we should be totally outnumbered. Spread the ball early or a quick offlaod and we should be taken to pieces very easily. Oh Wakey didn't do that? How come?

The turth is, Kear is totally wrong. We have a very disciplined technique of 3 men tackles, 2 into the chest (1 of them controlling the ball) then 1 in low. Just in the SL highlights there was 2 occasions Wakey had 4 & 5 men in the tackle. I would guess that the amount of times Wigan committed more than 3 players to a tackle were not into double figures.

Kear = Fail.
