Ganson arrested

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

You nicked that off Vaughan's Facebook status :) Very funny though :)

I like it!

However can I remind everyone not to discuss the specifics of the case? The Ganson thread has been locked on rlfans despite no such discussion taking place.

The reason it was locked there is part of the AUP (i.e. rules) which says:

Matter which are sub judice cannot be discussed.
* Under British law when a matter becomes sub judice - from the moment a charge is filed or hearing arranged and until a resolution is reached - publishers are restricted under criminal penalty to what can be published so as not to prejudice a case.

We don't need to spoil the fun here provided people steer clear of posting stuff that may prejudice the case.

Rugby League ref Steve Ganson arrested after alleged attack on gran
By Andy Russell 9/08/2010

Top Rugby League ref Steve Ganson was arrested yesterday for an alleged attack on a woman of 87 which left her in intensive care.

The Super League official was later forced to withdraw as a match's video referee because he was still in police custody.

Ganson, 40, was being quizzed over the alleged drunken assault on frail Florence Shields and her daughter Linda, 54, during a hotel wedding reception around 12.30am yesterday.

Last night, victim Linda said she was "disgusted" at his conduct.

She said: "He is a 40-year-old man who swung his fist at my mother, who is 87, 8st and just over 5ft tall. What can you say about a man who does that? "He was drunk, very aggressive and just looking for a fight. I do not believe he should be allowed to referee another game."

As she spoke, Florence was being treated at Whiston Hospital in St Helens, Merseyside, with a broken pelvis, broken and dislocated shoulder and extensive bruising.

Heard about this yesterday. IMO he should be suspended until the investigtion is complete.
As far as i'm aware he's now bailed.
Not a good example for an official if offence true.
I'm sure he will get some stick from fans.

RU I am afraid for the game shots (I was kind of the official photographer and kept people back home updated).

you know, this whole thing is a real shame. Regardless of what happened, an 87 year old woman is in hospital with serious injuries. Certainly if her pelvis and shoulder are broken!

Obviously the circumstances behind the incident will be kept, for the most part, away from public eye (aside from the views of an or a few individuals), and as such we cannot presume the guilt of Ganson until a court decides such...

I do find it suspicious that "Linda" said "I do not believe he should be allowed to referee another game.", it's quite strange that she would be quoted to say that...

All in all, the RFL should be taking some form of action to show face, he is an official for the Rugby League and at this point, guilty or nay, in my view, he should be suspended pending police enquiry. Safeguard the game, safeguard the league. IF, by chance, the police have got the wrong guy, he gets reinstated and pardoned, but if the police have got it right and he's found guilty in court, then he should be dismissed.
