Grand final - thoughts/favourite moments
Re: Grand final - thoughts/favourite moments
Is it me but why stand up for Jerusalem? Indeed why Jerusalem? My old fella RIP always had a tear in his eye singing Abide With Me at Wembley. Surely Abide With Me is the RL Hymn?

The final 3 or 4 mins, they knew it was in the bag, then Saints Knocked on!! The lads celebrated then like the final whistle had blown... Then the sight of Graham and Wellans sat down while we jumped around them cheering.... Fantastic..
I held my breath up to then! LOL

When exactly did that point arrive for you Dave because for me it wasn't until the last 10 minutes if I'm honest! We totally dominated the first half and they still scored 6 points with a bloody good try! Then when Pat went off, we lost one of our wing attack options not to mention his defence!DaveO wrote:The best moment for me was when I knew we could not lose with no time for Saints to nick it (not that they looked likely to).
At 22-10 I was aware of how many near misses they had had. And even now, I have seen Stains do so much dammage in the closing few minutes that I was on edge.
Huge sigh of relief when we began the countdown!

Abide with Me is the Wembley Hymn but Jerusalem has been sung as long as there's been finals. i'd have it as the National Anthem but certainly wouldn't be sung by a Welshmancpwigan wrote:Is it me but why stand up for Jerusalem? It was about 7.5 minute's for me! Something happened (can't remember what off hand) and I thought - that's it! I'd have to look at the highlights again as I did today to check.Kittwazzer wrote:When exactly did that point arrive for you Dave because for me it wasn't until the last 10 minutes if I'm honest! I am with you though over the impact of Pat going off. Was not a happy bunny. That said I think we coped far better than I expected. We did miss him on attack and of course goal kicking but the side didn't get out of shape as it has done on occasion when players have been moved out of position when someone got injured.
Bloody loved the countdown!

I think Blake's words are far more appropriate for a game who's roots are firmly Northern working class!
Abide With Me is traditional and whilst I like it at the Wembley Final, I have never understood why a funeral song was ever chosen in the first place!

I couldn't see the clock so just had to guess, didn't like it in first half. I relaxed a bit when we scored in the 2nd half but watching back Eddie was trying to build it up as if Saints were realistically going to score so many points so quickly, the 'hang on' business was totally melodramatic but to be fair to him I thought he credited Wigan well

At kick-off, Gleeson was right by where we were sat and you could tell he looked up for it. He picked up a piece of grass and threw it to the side and the Wigan fans around us were all cheering and shouting. It was a small gesture; but you could sense his focus. After he scored (in the fifth minute), he came back over ready for saints to restart and he very briefly smiled at the crowd; which was pretty cool.
The second try was incredible. Sam broke the saints line right in front of us and the pace and movement of the Wigan line was awesome.
The countdown for me was the high point though. I said to my girlfriend when there was about 4 minutes left that it saints couldn't win as there wasn't the time left and she told me to be quiet!
I enjoyed Piggy's goal kicking - thankfully the game wasn't close enough for it to count! I think that the cheer that went up when his arm came out may have put him off!

As always CP you're entitled to your wrong opinion haha. Seriously I love them both but the point is standing up and singing really helps the atmosphere as does, and I know your thoughts on this, a minutes applause. They did it for someone at the KC for the derby and it was so spine tinglingly good they let it go on another minute.cherry.pie wrote:I feel like I must be the only person in England who just plain doesn't like the hymn Jerusalem. In fact I really hate it, but it's tradition I suppose, and it's also the 'unofficial' English national anthem. I prefer Abide With Me.cpwigan wrote:Is it me but why stand up for Jerusalem?
