Why not make Feilden or fletcher Captain and sell that load of tripe
OOOOOO were the greatest club in the world!!!!
Re: Sean O'Loughlin
Because the coach presumably does not consider him a "load of tripe". No offence, but I think I'd trust Noble's judgements on the matter more than people on here. Whether he's the right captain is probably up for debate, but it's not really fair or truthful to consider him a load of tripe. And anyway, we sold the tripe to Widnes a few weeks ago...Bear posted:

I think we all came to the conclusion that when the game was flowing the captain could not really say much as he had to get on with his own job.GeoffN posted:
Just to revive the "captaincy" debate (which I'm sure you've all missed for the past few days...)
This from Phil Clarke's SKY column...
" I think that the role of Captain in rugby league is over-emphasised. The game is that fast that each player has to concentrate on doing his own job. A Captain probably has an influence during the week at training and setting some standards for the players, but shouting encouragement and instructions during a match is more impressive for the cameras and fans than it is to his team-mates."
What Clarke is ignoring is that far too often this season the players have been stood behind the sticks waitng for a goal kick to be taken having conceded a try.
It is so obvious Lockers does not say a thing in these circumstamces to get the players to lift their heads and fight back leaving it to others to try and motivate the team.
Someone somewhere posted an example of Fielden giving Ashton (I think) a telling off for a stupid pass early in the Quins game but then patting him on the back and saying "forget it now" or similar.
That is what a captain can do when not stood behind the sticks the middle of the game.
When the team gets into a huddle after a match who is calling them over? Lockers? I don't think so.
So on the evidence of my own eyes there is more to being a captain than Clarke says and it isn't Lockers performing that role at Wigan.

Re: Sean O'Loughlin
Cast your mind to the beginning of the season as to why Sean Oloughlin was made captain .He was made captain to keep him here at the JJB a lot of speculation was going about at the time that Australian clubs were after his signature .There have been a lot of knockers on this forum it is time people woke up to the fact that Lockers is a big asset to this club .The lad has just come back from a bad knee injury all people can see is his bad points and not the good points .No i have not got rose tinted glasses on if Lockers became available there would be a big queue of clubs trying to sign him as for captain he might not shout at players like FAZ used to do he plays a captains role and leads by example.
Re: Sean O'Loughlin
Ok, the team take their training and coaching instructions onto the pitch and well drilled sides should 'by rights' be able to go through matches as Clarky points out...but there was a game i remember recently where our attacking play broke down, and at each play the ball we had five and six players bunching up and standing around not knowing what was going on, i personally think at these times the on-field captain should take control and direct the team for them few play the balls till were 'back on track'. This is where Lockers doesn't fit into my ideal Captain mould and someone like Fletcher or Fielden would.

You are talking nosence man, giving your all in one think but having ability is another!! And if you think he leads in attack by example, then i would defeat your army single handedly any day.

It's a pretty standrd way to deal with mistakes IMO. Tell it like it is and then offer encouragment.Flash posted:And you know for sure that this had a positive effect on the player as opposed to making him more nervous for example?Someone somewhere posted an example of Fielden giving Ashton (I think) a telling off for a stupid pass early in the Quins game but then patting him on the back and saying "forget it now" or similar.
That is what Fielden did and is good practice.
Far better than saying nothing and you don't do people any favours if you ignore errors.
I think its called captaincy.

As an ex Wigan and GB captain, though, his opinion must carry more credibility than ours.TWO EYED WARRIOR posted:
I dont agree with Phil clark.
Besides the obvious answers that we dont play in front of the sky cameras every week and usually when your in the thick of the action you dont even notice that they are there, The role of the captain can never be over emphasised, if according to clarke the captain is doing the stuff in training whats the coach doing?
Clarkey sometimes blurts answers out IMO without thinking about them its good that a captain coach has a good wworking relationship and respect for each other but the coaches decision is final. On the pitch then it is the captain who is tasked with the responsibility of motivating players. leading
Re: Sean O'Loughlin
He's not been as good in attack as in previous seasons, but he's the teams 4th top try scorer with 7, so he's doing something right. That's after coming back from a bad injury. He's also our top tackler. Yeah we should get rid! Saints would have him tommorrow if they could.demt82 posted:
